Biomaterials Science

 Biomaterials Science is an international high impact journal exploring the science of biomaterials and their translation towards clinical use. Its scope encompasses new concepts in biomaterials design, studies into the interaction of biomaterials with the body, and the use of materials to answer fundamental biological questions.






Papers do not necessarily need to report a new biomaterial but should provide novel insight into the biological applications of the biomaterial. Articles that primarily focus on demonstrating novel materials chemistry and bring a molecular picture to bear on a given material’s suitability as a biomaterial are more suited to our companion journal, Journal of Materials Chemistry B.

Biomaterials Science publishes primary research and review-type articles in the following areas:molecular design of biomaterials, including translation of emerging chemistries to biomaterials
science of cells and materials at the nanoscale and microscale
materials as model systems for stem cell and human biology
materials for tissue engineering and regenerative medicine
(Nano)materials and (nano)systems for therapeutic delivery
interactions at the biointerface
biologically inspired and biomimetic materials, including bio-inspired self-assembly systems and cell-inspired synthetic tools
next-generation biomaterials tools and methods

Wiggling worms suggest link between vitamin B12 and Alzheimer’s

Worms don’t wiggle when they have Alzheimer’s disease. Yet something helped worms with the disease hold onto their wiggle in Professor Jessica Tanis’s lab at the University of Delaware. In solving the mystery, Tanis and her team have yielded new clues into the potential impact of diet on Alzheimer’s, the dreaded degenerative brain disease afflicting more than 6 million Americans. A few years ago, Tanis and her team began investigating factors affecting the onset and progression of Alzheimer’s disease. They were doing genetic research with  C. elegans , a tiny soil-dwelling worm that is the subject of numerous studies. Expression of amyloid beta, a toxic protein implicated in Alzheimer’s disease, paralyzes worms within 36 hours after they reach adulthood. Coated nanoparticles survive immune system and deliver drugs

Nanoparticles are promising drug delivery tools, offering the ability to administer drugs directly to a specific part of the body and avoid the awful side effects so often seen with chemotherapeutics. But there’s a problem. Nanoparticles struggle to get past the immune system’s first line of defense: proteins in the blood serum that tag potential invaders. Because of this, only about 1 percent of nanoparticles reach their intended target. “No one escapes the wrath of the serum proteins,” said Eden Tanner, a former postdoctoral fellow in bioengineering at the Harvard John A. Paulson School of Engineering and Applied Sciences (SEAS).
